How to Cook Tofu in an Air Fryer
I wanted to share this amazing recipe for air fryer tofu with you guys. This is my new favorite snack (also a great appetizer). I can’t believe it has taken me so long to discover it!
For years I thought I didn’t like tofu. I had only tried the wobbly kind that you get in in stir fries. That was up until I tried deep fried tofu, a.k.a. crispy clouds of perfection! Unfortunately anything deep fried cannot be that healthy for you.
Enter the air fryer.
It took a couple of attempts, but here is the recipe to air fry tofu to perfection. It is crisp and light and delicious. Also ready in no time.
You will need to use firm style tofu, as the other type is too soft and will fall apart when it is seasoned. To prepare, you just need to cut the tofu into cubes around 1 inch square. Then add some seasoning.
To get the crisp outer coating I use a little flour, mixed with spices, salt and sugar, and oil to stick it all together. When you are mixing the tofu in the spice mix be sure to mix it gently as possible as it is easy to damage the tofu cubes.
When you place the seasoned tofu in the air fryer basket try to make sure that the cubes are not touching each other. This allows the hot air to contact all surfaces helping to get that tofu really crisp on the outside!
Fried tofu is great served with a dipping sauce, or drizzle a sauce over the top. I like:
- Soy sauce
- Sweet chili sauce
- Sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
- Hoisin sauce
How to cook tofu in an air fryer
- 10 oz tofu , (firm style)
- 2 tsp five spice
- 1 tsp flour
- ½ tsp brown sugar
- ½ tsp salt
- olive oil
- Preheat air fryer to 360°F (180°C).
- Mix spice, salt sugar and oil in a bowl.
- Cut tofu into approx. 1in cubes.
- Add tofu to bowl and gently mix to coat tofu cubes in the spice mix.
- Place tofu in air fryer basket so that the cubes are not touching each other.
- Air fry tofu for 15 minutes.
- Serve with Hoisin sauce or soy sauce.
