  • Chicken breast steaks are very quick to cook, (much quicker than a whole chicken breast), meaning dinner can be ready in just a few minutes. And because they cook quickly, there is less risk of the chicken drying out during cooking.
  • This recipe can be seasoned in a variety of ways, making it a versatile dish that can be customized to suit any taste preference.

What do you need?

The ingredients for this chicken steaks recipe.

Chicken breasts

Opt for boneless and skinless chicken breasts. They provide a lean source of protein and are easy to cook. If you cannot find chicken breasts, you can use boneless and skinless chicken thighs as a substitution.

Seasoning

A blend of garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper will help bring out the flavors of the chicken. You can also try seasoning mixes like Italian seasoning or Cajun seasoning to change the taste.

For a simple homemade seasoning mix, try:

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika

Oil

Use a quality cooking oil with a high smoke-point and a neutral flavor, like olive oil, vegetable oil, or avocado oil.

Preparing the chicken steaks

To create the chicken breast steaks, take a sharp knife and gently slice the chicken breast horizontally through the middle. To avoid any danger of cutting your fingers, place the hand flat on top of the chicken breast while you slice, and cut slowly and carefully.

This will give you two thinner pieces with an even thickness, perfect for quick and even cooking.

How to cook chicken steaks

This recipe is very easy to prepare, and you can cook this recipe in a skillet, grill pan, or frying pan:

  1. First, pat the chicken breast steaks dry with a paper towel, removing any excess moisture. This step is important, as it will help you achieve a nice, golden sear. Add the chicken steaks to a bowl, drizzle with oil and seasoning, then toss to coat. You can also opt to marinate your chicken in a mixture of your choice for a few hours before grilling, if desired.
  2. Place a large skillet or grill pan over a medium-high heat and add a drizzle of oil. Allow the oil to heat up for about 1-2 minutes, or until it starts to shimmer. You can test if the oil is hot enough by adding a drop of water; if it sizzles immediately, you’re good to go.
  3. Carefully place the chicken breast steaks in the heated pan. Make sure not to overcrowd the pan, as it may decrease the heat and affect the searing process. If your pan isn’t big enough to cook all the steaks at once, it’s better to cook them in batches.
  4. Leave the chicken breast steaks undisturbed for about 3-5 minutes, or until the bottom side develops a beautiful golden-brown crust. Then, flip the steaks using a pair of tongs or a spatula, and sear the other side for an additional 3-5 minutes. Keep an eye on the heat, and adjust it as needed to ensure the chicken cooks at a steady pace without burning.

  1. Once both sides of your chicken breast steaks are nicely seared, use a meat thermometer to check for doneness. Insert the thermometer into the thickest part of the steak. The internal temperature should read 165°F / 74°C for fully-cooked chicken. If your steaks aren’t quite there yet, lower the heat and continue cooking, turning occasionally until the desired temperature is reached.
  2. Once your chicken breast steaks are cooked through, remove them from the pan, cover with foil, and let them rest for a few minutes. This allows the juices to reabsorb into the meat, keeping it tender and juicy.
Tip

Use an instant read thermometer to measure the temperature in the center of the thickest part of the meat for an accurate temperature reading.

Serving ideas

One classic combination is pairing chicken breast steaks with roasted or mashed potatoes. You can also serve your chicken alongside rice or pasta to make a complete meal. Grilled vegetables, such as zucchini, bell peppers, or asparagus, make a great addition to your meal too.

Adding a sauce or condiment can greatly enhance your chicken breast steaks’ flavor. Some tasty options include BBQ sauce, honey mustard, or even a homemade garlic and herb sauce. If you want a creamy accompaniment, a dollop of sour cream or Greek yogurt can add a velvety touch to your dish.

Now, all that’s left is to serve your perfectly grilled chicken breast steaks with your favorite side dishes and enjoy! You can also use grilled chicken breast steaks in salads, sandwiches, or wraps for an extra delicious summertime meal. Bon appétit!
