It’s no secret that I love my air fryer. It is definitely my favorite kitchen appliance. These days there are a huge number of different models of air fryers for sale, and choosing the best air fryer is no easy task.
In this post we compare the features and reviews of some of the most popular models of air fryer on sale, including popular models from Philips Viva and Avance airfryers, Power XL Air Fryer, Farberware air fryer, GoWISE Air Fryer, and Tefal Actifry. If you are in a hurry you can just skip to our air fryer comparison table, or to our recommendation for the best air fryer in 2019.
So what is an air fryer?
An air fryer is a kitchen appliance that cooks by circulating hot air around the food using a mechanical fan to circulate the hot air around the food at high speed. This crisps food up in a similar way to traditional frying, but without the oil or with less oil than you would normally use. This is why they are sometimes called a hot air fryer, an oil-less fryer, or a low-fat fryer.
Hot air frying is becoming an increasingly popular way to cook food, and with good reason. It is quick, almost mess-free, reduces cooking smells, and is much healthier than regular frying. However, it is basically very similar to convection oven baking (though quicker, and much more energy efficient).
Air fryer Reviews
If you are looking to buy an air fryer you have probably read many air fryer reviews in your search to find the best air fryer on the market. It is a great idea to do some research before you buy an air fryer, as there are many models on sale, and all air fryers are most definitely not created equal.
In this post we review some popular brands of air fryer available to buy. We take a look at how they perform in some key areas, including: price, performance, durability, how much you can cook in it, how much space it will take up in your kitchen, and common user experiences.
Philips basically invented air frying, so it is not surprising that their air fryers are some of the best on the market. Philips Airfryers have a patented Turbostar technology that they claim means food can be cooked without needing to be turned. Though remember that any food that is piled up (eg French fries) will still need to be shaken during cooking to ensure they cook evenly.
Philips have several offerings in various ranges of air fryers, including extra-large air fryers, like the HD9650 Avance XXL TwinTurboStar Airfryer, with a huge 6 serving capacity, and compact air fryers like the HD9643 Avance Digital Turbostar Airfryer. A solid mid-priced model is the Philips HD9621 Viva Turbostar Airfryer, while the top of their range is the HD9650, which is considered by many to be the best air fryer on the market. It has excellent reviews on Amazon, with an average of 4.5 stars. Some users were disappointed that these air fryers don’t come with a range of accessories like some other brands, only the basket is included with the main unit.
One of the big benefits of this range of air fryer is that the basket comes apart, and can go in the dishwasher. This is an absolutely essential feature as far as we are concerned, because there is no point in saving time cooking in an air fryer if you are going to have to wash it by hand when you are finished. Some of the older Philips Airfryer models were not dishwasher safe, so be sure to check the particular model before you buy.
This range of air fryers is a bit different from the others because it has a paddle that turns the food while it cooks. The manufacturers claim is that this means you can set and forget – no need to shake the food during cooking like other models. It also has a glass lid, which means you can keep an eye on the food while it is cooking.
Another difference is that the temperature is set to 338°F (180°C), and degree of cooking is adjusted by how long you cook it for rather than how hot it is. Again, all removal parts are dishwasher safe for easy clean-up. There have been mixed reviews on the Actifry paddle, with some users finding that it damaged the food during cooking, while others loved that they could set and forget and thought it gave good results.
A popular model is the T-fal FZ7002 ActiFry 2 in 1, which currently has 4.1 stars on Amazon.
Power Air Fryer XL
As you’ve probably seen on TV, this air fryer has six different cooking functions in one device, including roasting, air frying, baking, steaming, sautéing, and grilling. This is a mid-priced air-fryer, and comes in three different sizes, but the most popular model is the Power Air Fryer XL 5.3 Quart.
Users generally thought that this air fryer cooked the food well, and was easy to use. Positive comments were also on how easy it is to clean – it is dishwasher safe but some considered it was just as easy to wash it by hand. Some users report that this air fryer is a bit noisy, and those who had issues with their units considered customer service to be poor. The manufacturers only offer a 60 day warranty.
Farberware Air Fryers
This brand makes some of the cheapest air fryers on the market. If you are looking for an air fryer for under $100 then you are probably considering this one. It has a capacity of 2lb, and states that its basket is dishwasher safe.
Reviewers of Farberware air fryers report that the food is often not well cooked, ending up soggy rather than crispy. Some users found that the non-stick coating started to peel off after just a few uses. Users have also found that this brand can be a bit frustrating to use because the basket doesn’t always fit exactly right, and it won’t switch on until the basket is in the right place.
If you are set on getting one of these air fryers, check out Walmart because they often have a good price on this air fryer.
GoWise Air Fryers
Another brand that makes some of the cheapest air fryers available. Users generally found that this air fryer gave good results in terms of cooking the food, though some found that cooking times needed to be adjusted up a bit to get the food cooked to their liking. The capacity of some models of GoWISE air fryers is an impressive 5.8 quarts! However, some users have found that the bottom of the basket falls out when there is a heavy load, resulting in food falling to the floor.
Users have also reported having issues with the basket starting to rust after a short amount of usage. Since the basket only has a 30 day warranty(!) they were unable to get it replaced by the manufacturer. We would recommend staying away from any product that only has a 30 day warranty, because that is a sure sign that even the manufacturer doesn’t think their product is very good.
