Mashed potato is a classic side dish that everyone loves. This basic recipe for mashed potatoes has just four ingredients, is easy to follow, and only takes a few minutes to prepare, so it is perfect for beginner cooks.
Half fill a large saucepan with water and put on heat.
Peel the potatoes and cut into approx. 2cm/ 1-inch chunks. Carefully place into the heating water (remember the water will be hot and may splash).
Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and let the potatoes simmer for about 15, until they are fork tender.
Drain the potatoes in a colander and return them to the pot.
Add the milk and butter to the potatoes. Using a potato masher, a fork, or a handheld electric mixer, mash the potatoes until they reach your desired consistency.
Season with salt and pepper to taste, and give the potatoes a final stir.
Notes
Choose a starchy variety like Idaho, Russet, King Edward, Maris Piper or all-purpose.
