Ingredients

Quantities for all ingredients are given in the recipe card below.

Apples: one medium apple should yield around 1 cup of apple slices. It is best to peel, core and quarter the apple, and then cut it into slices. They need to be relatively small to ensure they cook quickly with the short cook time in this recipe.

Sugar: This recipe uses regular granulated sugar, but feel free to swap in any other type of sugar. Soft brown sugar or coconut sugar are both great options.

All purpose flour: required to make the batter.

Baking powder: This is needed to get the cobbler batter to rise as it is cooking. Be sure to use baking powder not baking soda.

Milk: To make the batter. I use regular full-fat dairy milk, but half-and-half is also fine. I haven’t tried using a plant-based milk in this recipe yet, but if you have success with this I would love to hear about it in the comments below!

Butter: the butter is melted in the baking pan while you are preheating the air fryer. It is essential to get that beautiful buttery taste that we all associate with a fruit cobbler.

Ground cinnamon: this spice is optional, and you can substitute any other spice you like, such as ground nutmeg of pumpkin spice.

Directions

Step 1: Place sliced apple in a bowl with the sugar for the filling, mix, and set aside. The sugar will draw out some of the juice from the apples, which makes the cobbler juicy.

Step 2: Place the butter in a 6 inch baking dish or pie dish and place into the air fryer. Preheat air fryer to 320°F/ 160°C for 3 minutes. This will melt the butter.

Step 3: While the air fryer is preheating, mix the flour, sugar for the batter and the baking powder together with the milk into a thick batter. When the air fryer has finished preheating, open it, add the batter on top of the butter, then place the apple slices on top including any juice that has been drawn out of the apples. Sprinkle some ground cinnamon on top of the apple.

Step 4: Bake the apple cobbler in the air fryer at 320°F/ 160°C for around 25-30 minutes until it is golden brown and cooked through.

Serving

You can serve apple cobbler hot or cold, and either way it is best served with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. You can also serve it with heavy cream, but I think it is best topped with ice cream (my kids agree!).

Storing and reheating

Store any leftover cobbler in an air-tight container in the refrigerator and use within 3 days.

You can reheat the cobbler in the air fryer or the microwave. 2-3 minutes in the air fryer, or around 1 minute in the microwave.
