These air fried sweet potato fries are a tasty and lighter alternative to regular fries. They cook super quickly in the air fryer, making them the perfect side dish for when you’re short on time.

This is one of my favorite side dishes because it is so quick and easy to whip up. Some other great air fryer side dishes to try are: air fryer sweet potato wedges, air fryer homemade fries, air fryer potato wedges, and air fryer baby potatoes.

What do you need?

See recipe card below for quantities.

Sweet potatoes: You can use any variety of sweet potatoes. I often use jewel sweet potatoes as I love the orange interior. The purple ones are also great for a pop of color in your meal if you cook them unpeeled.

Oil: I normally use light olive oil for this recipe, but any liquid cooking oil with a mild flavor and a high smoke point will work. You can also use an olive oil spray if you want to cut down on the amount of oil used.

Seasoning: The recipe below just uses kosher salt and black pepper for seasoning these fries, however if you prefer you can add other seasonings if you like. Try adding a simple seasoning mix of:

  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder and
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder

How to make sweet potato fries

Step 1: Prepare. Scrub or peel the sweet potatoes, and cut into fries approximately ¼ inch thick.

Step 2: Season and oil. Mix the oil, salt and pepper (and any other seasoning) in a large bowl. Pat sweet potato fries dry and add to the bowl. Toss to coat the fries with the oil mixture.

Step 3: Air fry. Place the sweet potato fries into the air fryer basket, try to arrange them in a single layer if possible. Then air fry at 360°F/ 180°C for 10-15 minutes. Shake the basket every 5 minutes to redistribute the fries and ensure they cook evenly.

The thicker the fries are the longer they will need to cook. So cook for additional 5 minute intervals if required until they are golden brown and crisped to your liking.

Serving ideas

Sweet potatoes go well with any meal and can be served alongside burgers, fish, and steak.

They are a particularly good side dish for steak. Because they cook so quickly, you can start them cooking while the steak is resting.

Alternatively, serve them as a party snack with your favorite dipping sauce.
