How to make sweet potato fries in an air fryer
Homemade sweet potato fries are delicious and healthy, and air frying is a great way to cook them! Not only is it healthier than deep frying, and faster that oven roasting or baking, but it also uses less oil.

Sweet potatoes: You can use any variety of sweet potatoes. I often use jewel sweet potatoes as I love the orange interior. The purple ones are also great for a pop of color in your meal if you cook them unpeeled.
Oil: I normally use light olive oil for this recipe, but any liquid cooking oil with a mild flavor and a high smoke point will work. You can also use an olive oil spray if you want to cut down on the amount of oil used.
Seasoning: The recipe below just uses kosher salt and black pepper for seasoning these fries, however if you prefer you can add other seasonings if you like. Try adding a simple seasoning mix of:
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder and
- ¼ teaspoon onion powder
Step 1: Prepare sweet potatoes. Scrub or peel the sweet potatoes, and cut into fries approximately ¼ inch thick.
Step 2: Season the fries. Mix the oil, salt and pepper (and any other seasoning) in a large bowl. Pat sweet potato fries dry and add to the bowl. Toss to coat the fries with the oil mixture.
Step 3: Air fry the fries. Place the sweet potato fries into the air fryer basket, and air fry at 360°F/ 180°C for 10-15 minutes. Shake the basket every 5 minutes to redistribute the fries and ensure they cook evenly. Cook until the fries are golden brown and crisped to your liking.
It is important to note that the thicker the potato is the longer it will need to cook. Sweet potatoes require less time than regular potatoes, but it still takes about 5 minutes per batch in the air fryer.
Sweet potatoes go well with any meal and can be served alongside burgers, fish, and steak.
They are a particularly good side dish for steak because they cook so quickly you can start them cooking while the steak is resting.
Alternatively, serve them as a party snack with your favorite dipping sauce.
Storage and reheating
Store any leftover sweet potato fries in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.
You can reheat sweet potato fries in the air fryer – place sweet potato fries in the air fryer basket and air for 2-3 minutes at 360°F/ 180°C until warmed through.
You can also reheat them in a microwave, however they will not remain as crisp as if you air fried them.

How to cook sweet potato fries in an air fryer.
- 2 large sweet potatoes
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt/ fine sea salt salt to taste
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
- Optional: 1 teaspoon of seasoning
- Peel sweet potatoes and cut into fries approximately ¼ inch thick. Pat the fries dry with a paper towel.
- Preheat air fryer to 360°F (180°C).
- Mix the olive oil, salt, pepper, and optional seasoning in a large bowl. add the sweet potato fries and toss to coat.
- Place sweet potato fries in the air fryer and cook for 10-15 minutes, shaking the basket every 5 minutes to redistribute the fries so they cook evenly.
- Air fry sweet potato fries until they are golden brown and tender. If you want them crisper, cook for another 5 minutes or until cooked to your liking.
