These air fryer flatbread pizzas are a handy low-effort meal to have up your sleeve. 4 ingredients, 10 mins cook time, and so easy the kids can make them!
These flatbread pizzas are a classic at my house because they are super fast, totally customizable, and so ridiculously easy to throw together that small children can make them! (maybe with a little supervision!)
They are great for an easy ‘chooose-your-own toppings’ pizza night, or a filling after-school snack. p.s. make extra because the leftovers are perfect for lunchboxes next day!
What do you need?
Flatbreads
I used pita breads in this recipe, but you could use just about any flatbread. Naan bread also works great as has a smoked flavour (almost like wood fired pizza). Or, for an extra thin crust, you could use a flour tortilla – just be careful not to pile the toppings up too much.
Pizza sauce
Use your favorite store-bought pizza sauce, or make your own with crushed tomatoes, garlic, and herbs – simmer together gently until it thickens. You could also substitute marinara sauce, tomato paste, or passata if that is what you have.
Note: canned chopped tomatoes are not thick enough to use straight out of the can as pizza sauce, but you could simmer them in a pot for a few minutes to thicken them up.
Cheese
Mozzarella is traditional, offering that coveted stretchy texture. You can use fresh mozzarella or shredded. Feel free to experiment with cheddar, provolone, or a blend of cheeses.
Toppings
In the recipe below I have kept it simple, and just added fresh basil. However, feel free to add your favorite toppings. Here are some we like:
- pepperoni
- sausage
- cherry tomatoes
- ham and pineapple
Note: I would recommend cutting the toppings up quite small and not piling the base up with too many toppings, as the quick cooking time means that the pizza may not have time to cook through before the cheese gets over done.
Olive oil spray
This is to lightly oil the pizza base so that the base gets crispy during cooking rather than dries out. You can use regular olive oil or cooking spray if you prefer.
How to make flatbread pizzas in the air fryer
1
Preheat.
Preheat the air fryer to 180°C/ 360°F. These pizzas are very quick to cook in the air fryer, so you want it to be hot as soon as they go in. If your air fryer doesn’t have a preheat mode, just set it to air fry for 3-4 minutes.
2
Prepare.
Prepare the pizzas. Spray flatbread with olive oil. Spread a layer of pizza sauce on the flatbread. Add mozzarella and any other toppings you like. Pop the flatbread pizzas into the air fryer.
3
Air fry.
Air fry the flatbread pizzas at 360°F/ 180°C for 10 minutes or until cheese starts to bubble. Keep an eye on them towards the end of the cooking time to keep them from getting overcooked.
Storing and reheating
Store any leftover pizza in an air-tight container in the refrigerator, and use within 3 days.
Put them in your kids lunch boxes, snack on them cold from the fridge, or reheat for a few minutes in the air fryer (see this post for more details on how to reheat pizza in air fryer).
