Ingredients
Quantities for all ingredients given in the recipe card below.
Apples: you can use any kind of apples you like. We normally use granny smiths, but honeycrisp apples and pink are also delicious in pie.
Pre-made pie crust dough: I use frozen premade pie crust (often Trader Joe’s). If you have a go-to recipe for homemade pie crust then please go ahead and use that. An unbaked crust is best, as you can use it to make a lattice crust, but you can also use a pre-baked crust if that is what you have.
Sugar: I normally use regular granulated sugar or soft brown sugar. If you prefer you can substitute coconut sugar.
All-purpose flour: Flour helps the apple pie filling to thicken up during cooking.
Spices: The recipe below uses a combination of cinnamon and nutmeg, but you can use any spice that you like. Try apple pie spice mix.
Butter: A small amount of butter helps to make the apple pie taste really rich and delicious.
Optional glaze: if you want to glaze your apple pie you can either use an egg yolk beaten with 1 teaspoon of water, or half-and-half cream of heavy whipping cream.
You will also need an 8-inch pie pan or baking dish.
Directions
Step 1: Prepare the pie crust. Use a sheet of premade pie crust pie crust to line an 8-inch pie pan. You can press the edges into a scalloped pattern for decoration if you like. Cut around the edge to remove any excess pie crust dough and set aside.
Place the lined pie pan into the refrigerator for at least 20 minutes, while you prepare the pie filling and top crust.
Step 2: Make the filling. Place all the filling ingredients into a medium bowl and mix until thoroughly combined. Roll out the leftover dough, and cut into strips.
Step 3: Prepare the pie. Spoon the apple mixture into the refrigerated pie crust. Cut the butter into small pieces and dot over the top of the filling. Lay the prepared strips of dough over the top of the pie alternating in a criss-cross pattern to make a lattice top. Optional: brush with glaze.
Step 5: Air fry apple pie. Place the apple pie in the air fryer basket, and air fry at 320F/ 160C for 25-30 minutes.
The cooking time will vary depending on how powerful your air fryer is, as well as the exact ingredients used (size of the apple pieces etc), so if required air fry for additional 3-4 minute intervals until the pie is cooked. You will know it is done when the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
Serving
Allow the pie to cool a little before serving (this will also help the filling to set so it is less runny when cut).
Then top with powdered sugar and serve with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Storage and reheating
If you have any leftover apple pie, store it in the refrigerator in an air tight container and use within 3 days.
To reheat the apple pie in the air fryer place it (in the pie pan) into the air fryer basket and air fry at 320F/ 160C for 4-5 minutes until warmed through.
