How to cook bolognese sauce in a slow cooker

There’s no denying that a slow cooker is one of the most convenient kitchen appliances. After a long day at work, it’s nice to come home to a ready-made meal.

And while slow cookers are typically associated with hearty stews and roasts, they can also be used to make lighter fare, like this slow cooker bolognese sauce.

There is something about the long, slow simmer that really brings out the depth of flavor in the sauce. It’s a rich, hearty sauce that is packed with flavor. And it’s so easy to make!

Made with ground beef, canned tomatoes, veggies and a few simple seasonings, this dish is perfect for a weeknight dinner. Serve it over pasta, or zucchini noodles, with a hunk of crusty bread on the side.

How to cook bolognese in a slow cooker or crock pot.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoon olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 3 onions, finely chopped
  • 2 lb (1kg) ground beef
  • 2 carrots, finely shredded
  • 3 cans crushed tomatoes
  • 4 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon mixed herbs
  • 1 tablespoon tomato ketchup

Instructions

  1. Switch on slow cooker and add olive oil, onions and garlic. Place lid on slow cooker.
  2. When the slow cooker has heated up and the onions are translucent, add the ground beef and break into small pieces using a wooden spoon. Replace the lid, and allow the meat to cook for ten minutes while you prepare the rest of the ingredients.
  3. Add the other ingredients to the slow cooker, and stir, again breaking up any large lumps of mince.
  4. Cook on high for 4 hours, or low for 8 hours.
  5. Serve over spaghetti and sprinkle with freshly grated Parmesan cheese.
